The middle name of Perkins was used
for several of Abraham's children in Census details and marriage or death
certificates even though not on the christening registration.
On a few
occasions the PICKARDs and PERKINs seem to have managed to get names mixed up
or not registered at all. Therefore some identification has been reached by a
combination of Census and other information. |

Following her marriage to Edward Howe
about 1845-1848, the couple were living in Little Park Street, Coventry.
By 1861 they had moved to nearby New Buildings in the shadow of Holy
Trinity church.
For the Censuses of 1881 and 1891 the family were
living back in Little Park Street.
Mary died in 1893 and was buried
at London Road Cemetary, Coventry.

Puzzle:
The Perkins and
Pickards (and later the Howes) seem to have been adept at messing up baptisms
and registrations. Mary's birth is a puzzle and everything points to an
incorrect name on the Baptism record for her and her father.
In 1893 Mary
died, her name being stated as Mary Perkins Pickard Howe, aged
67. The age and distinctive second name of Perkins point to a baptism at St.
Michael's, Coventry on 8th August 1825 of Mary Ann Perkins to Edward and Hannah
Pickard.
Edward was stated to be a Butcher.
However no marriage of
Edward and Hannah can be found, but a marriage of Abraham Perkins
Pickard to Hannah Griffis took place on 5th Jan 1824 at St. Michael's. In
addition the only Pickard family with a Hannah in 1841 in central Coventry that
can be found is Abraham and Hannah in Palmer Lane. They had a 15 year old
daughter Mary. Abraham was a butcher!
Unfortunately no baptism of Edward or
Abraham has been found.
The name Perkins was the maiden name of a Lucy
Perkins who married William PICKARD in 1799. It is likely that this couple were
the parents of Abraham and grandparents of Mary. Could Mary's father's name be
Abraham? Or could there have been an Edward Perkins Pickard?
Note: An
interesting fact is that Edward and Mary's 3rd son was called Abraham, but his
birth Certificate stated his father's name as Abraham, not Edward!!
