Parents: John Cort and Ann (nee Ainsworth )
Marriage: Mary Hardy at Flixton, Lancs, on 12 December 1791.

  2. James Cort ..about 1794 in Bolton... Chr. 21 Feb 1794 at St.Peter's.
  3. Ann Ainsworth Cort..about 1796 in Bolton. Chr... 17 Feb 1796 at St.Peter's. She married John Gerrard 25 on Apr 1829 at Leyland, Lancs.
  4. Alice Ainsworth Cort..Born 7 Mar 1798 in Chorley...Chr. 10th April 1798. She married Tom Forrest in Leyland on 7 Sep 1817.
  5. Peter Cort..Born 12 Nov 1800 in Chorley..Chr. 9 Jan 1801...Married Catherine Williamson at Chorley in 1823.
  6. Jane Cort...Born 30 Aug 1803 in Chorley. ..Chr. 9 Oct 1803 at Chorley
  7. Thomas Cort ...Born 23 Dec 1805 in Chorley...Chr. 23 Jan 1806 at Hollingshead or New Street Independant, Chorley. Thomas died of dropsy aged 11 on 14 Sep 1817 at Chorley. He was buried on 16.9.1817 at the Independant Burial Ground, New Street, Chorley.
Death of Wife:
General: Born in Bolton, it seems that Edward moved to Chorley with his wife and young family between 1796 and 1798. (He may possibly have remarried there in 1817.) Several of his sons remained in the Chorley area and it is likely he was the "founder" of all the CORT families in Chorley.

General: John was born in Chorley but the family had moved to Bolton area by the time he reached the age of 10. After his marriage he lived around Pilkington, Unsworth and Hollins for the rest of life.

Occupation: In 1861 he was a Finisher in a Bleach Works.

Death: Mar QTR 1926, registered at Birkenhed. He was 85.
Occupation: Chemists's Assistant in 1861; In 1881 he was a Manufacturer Of Aerated Waters employing 3 men and 1 boy

  2. Clara Elizabeth..12 Sep 1872 ... Chorlton, Manchester
  3. Alice..20 Sep 1874... Chorlton, Manchester. She married Robert Turnbull in 1894.
  4. Agnes..26 Apr 1876... Chorlton, Manchester. Agnes married George Parry in 1903 at Birkenhead where they later lived.
  5. Eleanor.. 1877... Chorlton, Manchester. Possibly married Arthur Wilkinson but see later. Child: Arthur Cort Wilkinson 1899. Later she married George Dunkin in 1914 (but gave name as Eleanor Cort !).
  6. Emma... 14 Feb 1880 ...Chorlton, Manchester. She married James Murrell Fortune, a Theatrical Agent, in Dec QTR 1914 in the registration district of St.Martins, London. They had four children: Gladys, Katherine, Phyllis and James Henry.
  7. Peter Henry... 21 Mar 1881...Chorlton, Manchester. Peter married Ada Smith in 1910 at Seacombe, Wirral.
  8. William Spencer ....23 Oct 1882. Chorlton, Manchester. Willam went to live in New Zealand before WW1 but returned and fought in the trenches where he was wounded. He married Dorothy Margaret Grant on 10 April 1920 at Mortlake, Surrey. They had no children and later they lived at Wimbledon. He died in Surrey in Sep 1960 aged 777.

Occupation: Grocer in 1851 in Bolton at 111 or 114 Church Street. Later he probably was a Ropemaker in Lower Crumpshall, Manchester. (per 1877 Slater's Directory )
Children: 1. John William Cort .. Jun QTR 1849.. Chorley. He died aged 11 in Sep QTR 1858 (registered at Burnley..8e 81)
  2. Edward Cort ..about 1850 in Preston. It is believd he died in Dec QTR 1850 (registered at Preston ..21 158)
  3. Mary Ellen Cort..about 1853 in Preston. She married William Broadhurst at Prestwich Sep QTR 1876 ( 8d 495)
  4. Peter Cort in about 1856 in Preston...Peter married Emma Burns in Prestwich Sep QTR 1875 (8d 810). In 1881 he was a Paper manufacturer and in 1901 was a Ropemaker in Manchester.
Children: Thomas 1877, Annie 1878, Alice 1881, Harry 1883, Florence 1887, Edward 1899.
Death of Wife:
General: After their marriage the couple moved to the Burnley district and in 1861 Thomas, Elizabeth and children Mary Ellen and Peter were living at Pendleton, north-west of Burnley. In 1871 they were all in Crumpshall, Manchester.

1. Mary Jane Armitage on 22 Dec 1872 at Manchester .
2. Mary Elizabeth Aggett (Widow) on 23 May 1894 at St. Luke's, Manchester
Death: 1923
Occupation: In 1871 and 1881 William was a Manager in his brother's factory in Manchester which produced Aerated water.
Later he was licensee of the Lord Stanley Inn, 51 Rosamund Street East, Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester,
from around 1895 to his death in 1923, at the age of 81.
Children: 1. Peter.. 17 May 1873... Chorlton, Manchester
  2. Thomas Armitage..28 Mar 1875 ... Chorlton, Manchester. Thomas became a Policeman and later a Publican in Manchester. He married Lily Ann Lindley and they had 1 son, William Lindley Cort in 1911 and a daughter Dorothy L. in 1914. Thomas died in 1936.

Death of Wife:
General: In 1863 William and his brother Edward went to America as young men to fight in the Civil War.
Both the Union and Confederate States of America were advertising at this time in England, particularly in the cotton towns of the north, and it was probably one of these advertisements that attracted William's attention. He arrived in Chicago on October 8th 1863 where he enlisted on the U.S. Ship "CLARA DOLSEN". On November 12th he transferred to the U.S. Ship "PAW-PAW" which during the next year saw active service against the Confederates.
It was the following incident which earned William his Pension:- "That while a member of the organisation aforesaid, in the service and in the line of duty on the Tennessee River, on or about the beginning of September 1864, he had his big toe of his left foot mashed, and otherwise injuring the foot, by the gun carriage tilting on his foot, while engaging some Bushwackers who were crossing the said river".
