In 1863 William and his
brother Edward went to America as young men to fight in the Civil War. Both
the Union and Confederate States of America were advertising at this time in
England, particularly in the cotton towns of the north, and it was probably one
of these advertisements that attracted William's attention. He arrived in
Chicago on October 8th 1863 where he enlisted on the U.S. Ship "CLARA DOLSEN".
On November 12th he transferred to the U.S. Ship "PAW-PAW" which during the
next year saw active service against the Confederates. It was the following
incident which earned William his Pension:- "That while a member of the
organisation aforesaid, in the service and in the line of duty on the Tennessee
River, on or about the beginning of September 1864, he had his big toe of his
left foot mashed, and otherwise injuring the foot, by the gun carriage tilting
on his foot, while engaging some Bushwackers who were crossing the said river".
