Peter CORT

Birth: Peter Cort was born on the 16th January 1801 in Bolton, Lancashire.
Christening: He was christened on 2nd April 1801 at St. George's Church, Bolton.

Parents:
Father: Peter Cort
whose occupation was a Bleacher
Mother: Priscilla Cort (nee Wraith)

Early Life:
The family lived in the Turton area north of Bolton possibly very close to Chapeltown.

Occupation:
At the age of 27 Peter took over his father's business of running Peter Cort & Co, Bleachers at Horrobin Mill, adjoining the Horrobin Brook in the Bradshaw Valley. He later expanded the business and took over the 2 other nearby Bleachworks of Turton and Bradshaw.

Siblings: It is known he had at least 2 sisters, Mary Ann 1798, Caroline 1806 and one brother James 1803. Unfortunately baby Caroline died the same year she was born.

Marriage:
He married Elizabeth SPENCER, the daughter of William Spencer and Mary (nee Ashworth) at St. Peter's Church, Bolton on 27th June 1833.

Children:

1.Mary 1835 in Turton....Mary married Thomas Smith, a former Sergeant in the Light Brigade, and later Master of the Foleshill (Coventry) Workhouse, where Mary was Matron.
2.Thomas 1838 in Turton... He married Elizabeth MIDGELEY and died in 1918.
3.Peter Henry1840 in Turton...He married Elizabeth McStocker .
4.William 1842 in Turton...William fought in the American Civil war before returning to Manchester. He married Mary Jane Armitage and died in 1923.
5.Edward 1843 in Turton...Edward also fought in the American Civil war but stayed in Canada where he died by drowning in Lake Eyrie in 1867.

Death: Peter died on the 8th Feb 1850 from consumption and was buried at Turton.
