CALEB CAKEBREAD

1842-1909
COVENTRY

Parents:  William ,  a Plush Weaver and Martha who both moved from Bloxham, in Oxfordshire 3 years before Caleb's birth.

Caleb was born in Coventry on the 1842, and christened on 8th June 1844 at St.Michael's Church, Coventry.

Early Years: He was one of 7 children born to his parents, but 2 died before Caleb was born.
As a child he lived near the centre of Coventry.

Occupation: At the age of 19 he was a Plush Weaver, like his parents, but in 1871 he described himself as a   Worsted Weaver. He probably worked at the nearby large textile works of Leigh Mills round the corner in Hill Street as in 1874 there is a newspaper report of him representing that Works in sporting events . Later in life he was a Cotton Warp Dresser.

Marriage : At the age of 27 he married Eliza NICHOLLS, from Coventry on 15th May 1869 at Holy Trinity Church,Coventry. The witnesses were David and Maria Porter.

Children: The couple had 8** children:

It is believed that William did not marry and lived with his father until Caleb died. William stayed on at the house in Radford. He was a Miner and later a Labourer. He died in 1946.

James 1874 Died in 1942 James married Mary Green in Dec QTR 1894 at Coventry.
Thomas 1880 Born at 51 Radford, Coventry. Died in 1942 at Whitefriars St, Coventry. Thomas was a Barber and was believed to have stayed single. He was made a Freeman of the City of Coventry in 1900 and lived all his adult life in central Coventry.

Charles 1883   Charles married Emma Asplin in Dec QTR 1904 at Coventry (Charles's descendants)
Sarah 1886 Born at 57 Radford, Coventry In 1911 Annie was a Tube Drawer. She married Charles Rothwell at Radford, Coventry Mar QTR 1917.
Annie 1889 Born at 57 Radford, Coventry In 1911 she was a Domestic Servant. She married Thomas England at Coventry Jun QTR 1911.


GENERAL Caleb was a good sportsman and there are newspaper reports of him between 1874 and 1894 playing cricket and soccer for his place of work, Leigh Mills as well as appearing in a Rifle Club competition

Around 1890 Caleb's wife, Eliza, ran off with her lover, taking young Sarah with her, and leaving Caleb to raise the young family including baby Annie.

Known Places of Residence:
As a child Caleb lived at Spring Grove (near the present Cox Street), Coventry.
From 1861 until 1869 the family were at Leicester Street, Coventry about a mile away, and from 1870 to 1877 Caleb and wife Eliza were living close by at Hill St. I
By 1880 they had moved out from the city centre a short distance to Radford near the Common where Caleb remained until his death.

Death: Caleb died on 24 January 1909 from Bronchitis exhaustion at his home at 57 Radford.
