Like his father Robert became a Plush
Weaver in the village of Bloxham, near Banbury, Oxfordshire. In 1837 he was
described as a Pauper and the family was living in the Banbury Workhouse. So
Robert moved to Coventry with his wife and young family together with his 2
brothers, William and George, in around 1839. For a couple of years they lived
in the smelly, overcrowded, central areas of the City. However by 1842 they had
moved out a few miles to the Foleshill area, then a spread out group of small
hamlets etc. From 1851 to 1881 the family were living in the Hall
Green district of Foleshill, just a few groups of cottages in a rather flat
rural area. |

James was a Publican between 1821-1835 in Foleshill, running the Prince William
Henry Public House on the main Foleshill Road. They had 8 more children. In
1841 James was in Coventry Gaol (reason not known) and Mary was a coal dealer
at Well Street in central Coventry with the children. By 1851 James was back
with the family, now in Cook Street, Coventry and described as a Brewer. It
is believed he died about 1858.
* The 2nd christian name of Reading is
interesting. So far no reason for this has been found although there was a

Martha seems to have lived her early life
in the pretty village of Cropredy just north of Banbury on the Warwickshire /
Oxfordshire border. She was married in Cropredy but it is not known exactly
where the couple lived after that..certainly it was in the Banbury area. In
1837 they were destitute and living in the Banbury Workhouse where their son
John was born. Around 1838-9 William and Martha, decided to move the 30
miles to Coventry where there was more work. After arriving in Coventry William
and Martha first lived in West Orchard, in the centre of the city, but
soon moved to nearby Spring Grove (near the present Cox Street),
Coventry. In 1861 and 1871 they were living in Leicester Street where
Martha died in 1877. |

| Death of Husband: |
Caleb died in 1909 in Coventry but by
that time Eliza had been living with another man for many years. |
|
|
| General: |
General: Eliza's early life is
obscure. In the 1851 Census she was at Hill Street, and in 1861 she was in
nearby Spon Street, Coventry with her parents . After her marriage to Caleb
the couple were in Hill Street btween 1871and 1877. By 1881 they had moved
out of the city about 1 mile to Radford (Common), where they stayed
until about 1890. Then Eliza apparently ran off to the north of England with
her lover, a builder's labourer, who was said to be working on a nearby Public
House. She took 4 year old Sarah Jane with her but left the baby Annie and
other children with husband Caleb. It seems she settled in Sheffield with
her new partner, Thomas Alexander. In 1892 Eliza gave birth to a son also
named Thomas Alexander. It was difficult to find her in the 1901 Census as she
was recorded as Elizabeth Nicholls living with partner Thomas in Sheffield. Her
daughter Sarah, aged 15, was found living and working as Domestic Servant at
the house of a Clergyman and family in Sheffield. Eliza must have kept in
touch with the family she left behind in Coventry because in 1909, very soon
after the death of her husband Caleb, she remarried in Sheffield to Thomas
Alexander, the man she had been living with. Nothing more can be found so
far about Eliza. It is known that her daughter Sarah returned to Coventry in
her late teens and married and settled down there. |
