JOSEPH HARRISON
About 1804-1837

EXHALL

The birth details and parents of Joseph remain unknown. He was probably born in Exhall or nearby Bedworth. Unfortunately the Parish records for Exhall for the vital years are very poor both in numbers of entries and clarity of handwriting.
One source indicates this was due to there being no resident vicar, the Parish being served by a vicar who came by horseback from a neighbouring parish and was noted for his taste for alcohol and writing up the registers after he had slept off the effects.

No christening entries for Joseph or his only known sister Ann have yet be found.

Siblings: Anne (about 1789) who married Thomas Wakelin on 25 May 1808 at Exhall.
Occupation: Joseph was a Coal miner.

Marriage:
He married Sarah Barkby, from Bedworth, on the 25th December 1822 at Exhall. Sarah was born at Bedworth in August 1796 to Joseph Barkby and Elizabeth (nee Orton). Sarah died in 1833, aged 36, leaving a husband and 4 children. She was buried at Exhall Parish Church on 7th June 1833. (Parish Reg) Witnesses: Mary Randle and Thomas Wilkinson.

Children: The couple had 4 children:

Emanuel Chr. 19th Feb 1832 at Exhall As a young man he was a Tailor and married Charlotte Walker. Later he became a Policeman .
*Also being researched by other descendants.

Known Places of Residence:

After their marriage it is assumed the couple lived either at Bedworth, where Sarah's parents lived, or had moved to Exhall. At that time Exhall was recorded as being a pleasant well wooded agricultural area. The houses were lacking any services and water was from a village pump. Most families kept a pig.

Unfortunately after only 11 years of marriage Sarah died in 1833, leaving Joseph to raise the 4 young children alone. Tragically, only 4 years later Joseph also died. The orphaned children were apparently split up, 8 year old Elizabeth going to stay with her grandmother Eliza Barkby at Crows Nest, Bedworth while the 3 boys: Thomas 13; Joseph 11 and Emanuel 4 went to live with their aunt, Ann Wakelin at Lentons Lane about 2 miles away.

Death: Joseph died in 1837, at the stated age of 32 (he was probably older than this), and was buried on the 25th April 1837 at Exhall Church.
